ANEXOS

Rand Daily Mail - 9 September 1964 - «End of month is rain deadline piped water is sought - Tvl. faces its costliest drought».

Pretória reporter

The costliest drought in the Transvaal is dragging on and heavy losses are feared unless it rains soon, according to Mr. J. Reinecke, secretary of the Transvaal Agricultural Union.
The shortage of water in the northern ranching areas has become critical over an area of thousands of square miles.
An urgent call is to be made on the Government later this month to help farmers find better water supplies, and to pipe water to certain areas from the Limpopo River.

Subsidies

A deputation led by the president of the South African Agricultural Union, Mr. De la Harpe de Villiers, will see the Minister of Agricultural Technical Services, Mr. Le Roux, later this month to ask for:
Additional financial aid in the search for water.
Heavier subsidies to help pay for dry boreholes.
The piping of water from the Limpopo to farms which have been out off from the river by the foot-ande-mouth disease fence.
The provision of more modern pneumatic drilling machines.
The Transvaal Agricultural Union estimates that more than half the holes bored during the past few months have been dry.

Crop leans

Meanwhile, Mr. Reinecke said yesterday that the Government through that the State Advances Office was to offer vegetable and fruit farmers the same generous crop loan facilities as were granted every year to grain farmers.
These would be for farmers in the Barberton, Nelspruit, Pilgrim's Rest. White River and Tzaneen districts whose crops were destroyed by frosts and drought.
Mr. Reinecke said that the limited fodder supplies available for castle in the drought areas were being «stretched to a maximum» in an effort to bridge the gap before the mirst rains.
«But if it does not rain before the end of this month many farmers will be in desperate straits and losses would be unavoidable», he said.

Rand Daily Mail - 26 August 1964 - «Let's think big' farmers told - River plan for drought areas».

Pretoria repórter

The piping of water from flowing rivers to the drought stricken areas of the Northern Transvaal was mooted vesterday ar the annual congress of the Transvaal Agricultural Union.
«Let's think big», Mr. P. R. du Toit, a Zeerust farmer who is a member of the union's cattle committee, told the 250 delegates.
He mentioned such rivers as the Crocodile and the Marico. He said a pipeline scheme would cost less than the sinking of boreholes.
Mr. Du Toit said the North and North-Western Transvaal was being depopulated. This had started because farmers had not been getting profitable prices. The drought had been the last straw.
The congress passed a resolution in that a comprehensive investigation be made into the supply of drinking water in the ranching areas to improve it, either by sinking more boreholes, constructing more river dams or laying pipe Unes.
Another resolution approved was one asking the Government to undertake a comprehensive investigation into available water supplies - under as well as above ground - and how they are used and, if necessary, to establish a national water board to undertake and control distribution.
