DELEGAÇÕES E DEPUTAÇÕES DA ASSEMBLEIA DA REPÚBLICA

Relatório elaborado pelo Deputado Mendes Bota, do PSD, relativo à sua participação numa conferência sobre a Convenção de Istambul, organizada pelo Center for Women War Victims — ROSA e pela Comissão da Igualdade de Género do Parlamento da Croácia, da Assembleia Parlamentar do Conselho da Europa (APCE), que decorreu em Zagreb no dia 21 de outubro de 2014

No dia 21 de Outubro de 2014, fui orador convidado para fazer a intervenção de referência numa conferência internacional subordinada ao tema da “Convenção do Conselho da Europa para a prevenção e o combate á violência contra as mulheres e a violência domçstica”, organizada pelo Center for Women War Victims – ROSA e pela Comissão da Igualdade de Género do Parlamento da Croácia.
A conferência contou com participantes de muitos Estados da região balcânica, e teve a intervenção de altas individualidades da Croácia, entre elas o Presidente da República, Ivo Josipovic, e do Presidente do Parlamento da Croácia, Josip Leko.
Fiz uma intervenção cujo texto consta do Anexo ao presente relatório.

Speech by Mr. Mendes Bota, General Rapporteur on violence against women of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe at the Conference dedicated to the “Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence” Parliament of Croatia, Zagreb, 21 October 2014

Session on “The importance of ratifying and implementing the Istanbul Convention”

I was asked a written speech, for making translator’s work easier, but I do not resist sharing with you a previous note.

As usual, I got up this early morning, took a look at the online newspapers, and an old song from the Beatles, in the old sixtie’s, called “A Day in the Life” came to my mind. That song, a part of the famous “Seargent Peppers Lonely Hert’s Club Band” that started with lyrics “I read the news today, oh boy!...” The front page of the main daily newspaper in Portugal, “Correio da Manhã”, was titling in front page headline: “Engineer kills wife and daughter”. I read the news today, oh boy! Another title as many others, but this happened today, just before coming here to this conference, reminding me how many lessons we can learn from that single title:

- Violence against women keeps killing; - An engineer, insanely jealous, means violence against women crosses all social classes; - It can happen everywhere, in Portugal, as in Croatia; Consultar Diário Original
