Also, it would be important to extend training programs to a wider range of senior workers. Despite the

general perception on this matter – that such instruction is wasted on workers nearing retirement age –, studies

show that, regardless of age, people as a rule become more productive after attending such programs.

Finally – as this is a topic dear to me – I would like to draw attention to the specific case of senior female

workers.

True, the problem of age discrimination affects both genders equally. But women in this situation find

themselves doubly struck by prejudice – over their age and also their gender.

It is not overstating to say their plight is twice as scarring. But any legislative initiative, both on the EU and

national levels – one that would yank this problem from legal vagueness and expose it under the frame of a

clear moral debate – would benefit all genders and generations.

Let’s not forget that with the rise in life expectancy so did standards in age perception change.

Accompanying the working masses in this migration, from the growing fields to the assembly line, the office

desk, the company boards, went as well a mitigation of physical exertion, a change in habits and, especially, a

prevalence in intelectual endeavors.

Senior workers today have the sort of vitality that would not have been possible only decades ago. There is

a potential in knowledge and experience in this area to explore that we cannot, must not, throw to waste!
