The Portuguese Presidency of the European Union, which ends this month, has aimed to mobilise

Member States around the European Green Deal. Supporting decarbonisation, energy efficiency,

circular economy, sustainable mobility, and the conservation and recovery of ecosystems and

biodiversity are some of the objectives.

Allow me to draw attention to the importance of the circular economy as a generator of wealth and

jobs. As a member of the Committee on Agriculture and the Sea of the Assembleia da República,

the environmental impact of farming and fishing activities, the management of land and marine

resources and the preservation of ecosystems are our main concerns. Only with full respect for the

planet can we guarantee a future for the next generations.

The environment needs all of us and affects everyone. It is up to us, legislators, to develop national

policies in close cooperation that combat and adapt to climate change. We need to act locally and

regionally so that the impact will be global.
