AGREEMENT

BETWEEN

THE PORTUGUESE REPUBLIC

AND

THE HELLENIC REPUBLIC

ON CO-OPERATION

IN DEFENCE MATTERS

The Portuguese Republic and the Hellenic Republic, hereinafter referred to as the «Parties»,

In accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Organization for Security and Co-

operation in Europe;

Having in mind the development of the bilateral co-operation in defence matters between the two States;

Recognizing the applicability of the provisions of the Agreement between the Parties to the North Atlantic

Treaty regarding the Status of their Forces (NATO SOFA), done in London, on June 19, 1951;

Determined to contribute to the strengthening of the European Union and broader transatlantic relationship,

by acting in the spirit of partnership and co-operation through the development of strong relations in the field of

defence, in both NATO and EU,

Have agreed as follows:

ARTICLE 1

PURPOSE

This Agreement aims to promote co-operation between the Parties concerning defence matters, within their

competences, in accordance with their respective internal law and the international obligations undertaken by

the Parties and on the basis of the principles of equality, reciprocity and mutual interest.

ARTICLE 2

DEFINITIONS

For the purpose of this Agreement the terms listed below are defined as follows:

a) «Sending Party» means the Party that sends personnel, assets and equipment to the territory of the

Receiving Party;

b) «Receiving Party» means the Party in whose territory the personnel, assets and equipment of the Sending

Party are located;

c) «Personnel» means military and civilian personnel working for the institutions and bodies of the Parties.

ARTICLE 3

AREAS OF CO-OPERATION

1. The co-operation between the Parties shall be developed in the following areas:

a) Strategic Dialogue;

b) Defence policy and military doctrine;

c) EU Common Security and Defence Policy;

d) Defence industries, technologies and equipment;

e) Defence capabilities;

f) Defence and military legislation;

g) Planning and budgeting;
