II - Legislation and legal measures to prevent and combat the violence against women The Domestic Violence Act - Law n. 12/2009, of 16 September It establishes the legal regime applicable to the prevention of domestic violence and to the protection and assistance to its victims. It repeals the Law n. 107/99, of 3 August, as well as the Decree-law n. 323/2000, of 19th December.
The Socialist Party has announced the proposition, in the Parliament, of gender quotas on company boards and public departments.
The Party announced that it will submit a legislative proposal aimed at achieving 33% female representation on the boards of all public companies and central administration departments. Other relevant political and policy landmarks on gender equality: - Our government launched the National Plan against Human Trafficking, to be coordinated with the 3rd National Plan for Equality on questions related to violence against women; - The percentage of women in universities has been growing and, at present, it is higher than the percentage of men in almost all the degree courses; - The representation of women in key decision-making positions in the cultural sector is currently lower than that of men; - The Third National Plan for Citizenship and Gender Equality was launched in 2007 and will run until 2010. The Plan reinforces the combat to gender inequality in all domains of political, social, economic and cultural life in an integrated and transversal way and 36
