THE SITUATION IN PORTUGAL Although a very recent democracy (36 years), Portugal already has a history on equal opportunities issues: 1977: • Legal concept of “head of family” is revoked; • Commission for feminine condition (already functioning since 1974) is institutionalized; 1979: • First woman to be nominated Prime Minister; • Government creates Commission for equality in labour and employment; 1980: • Portugal ratifies the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women in 1980, without any reservation, being one of the first member states of the United Nations to do so; 1991: • Commission for equality and women’s rights succeeds Commission for feminine condition; • Women are admitted in the Armed Forces; 1999: 33
