• XIV (the fourteenth) Constitutional Government includes a Ministry for Equality – led by a woman; 2007: • Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality succeeds Commission for equality and women’s rights (with competence in matters of domestic violence).

However, equality is not yet a reality: • Gender pay gap is still above 8% (8,3% in 2007); • According to the UN (2009), Portugal is one of the countries with the lowest number of female directors in major companies; • A woman in a management position earns, on average, less 30,5% than a man in the same position; • Female retired workers receive between 59,5% and 77,1% the amount received by male retired workers; • Statistics show that female workers have less stable links and are more severely struck by unemployment; • Although the share of women in the cabinet increased from 13% to 29% following the September elections, • The share of women in the Portuguese Parliament remains around 30% - however, no Committee is chaired by a woman.

Our constitutional framework is the basis for the promotion of equality: - Article 9 (Fundamental tasks of the state) 34
