Joint statement

The Heads and/or Members of the Delegations of Cyprus, Greece, ltaly and

Portugal to the lnterparliamentary Conference on the Common Foreign and

Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP),

Having gathered in Nicosia, on 22 January 2020, for the 3rd Ad Hoc Meeting

of Heads of Delegation of the GroupMed countries to the lnterparliamentary

Conference on CFSP and CSDP, following the Athens Meeting, in April 2016 and

the Granada Meeting, in June 2018,

Reiterating the universal and European values they share, including peace,

freedom, human rights, the rule of law, democracy, equality and solidarity, which

they commit to uphold,

Valuing their Mediterranean identity and acknowledging the common

challenges, both of a socioeconomic and security nature the countries of the

Mediterranean are called to address,

Stressing that common security challenges, namely illegal criminal network

activities with relation to migration, the management of migration and refugee

flows, the issues of terrorism, energy security and the effects of climate change,

call for common solutions and demand joint action,

Expressing concern for the tension and ongoing conflicts in the

Mediterranean region, particularly in Syria and Ubya, which constitute a threat to

regional peace and stability, with effects expanding well beyond the region and

affecting in turn the European Union in multiple ways,
